In August 1962 two Lockheed WU-2A aircraft from 4028th Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron, 4080th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, USAF arrived at RAF Upper Heyford. Their mission was ‘Operation Crawfish’, as part of the High Altitude Sampling Program (HASP) to collect air samples over the USSR for analysis of evidence of nuclear testing.
