The 42nd ECS was re-activated at RAF Upper Heyford in 1983 operating EF-111A Raven (aka Spark ‘Vark) in the Electronic Countermeasures role in support of NATO aircraft. Five 42nd ECS Ravens took part in the Operation El Dorado Canyon bombing raid on Libya on 15 April 1986. In 1991 deployments were made to Turkey and Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Shield and over 900 sorties were flown during Operation Desert Storm (First Gulf War). 42nd ECS de-activated in 1992.
